We are excited to partner with you as you guide your elementary students in their faith! Below, you will find details about the lesson we learned this week and a helpful activity to reinforce the lesson at home.
Bible Story: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector to show that pride is a real problem. Pride makes us think we do not need God and can please Him simply by doing good things. The tax collector received mercy because he knew he was a sinner. The Pharisee did not receive mercy because he was prideful and thought he didn’t need mercy from God. Read more in Luke 18:9-14.
Memory Verse: Mark 6:34
“He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.”
Home Activity: Practice Humility
It can be hard to humble ourselves before others. Practice modeling humility in front of your family at mealtime by offering an apology to a member of the family for something you did or didn’t do this week. Explain that you want to follow the example of the tax collector that Jesus taught in his parable by acknowledging when you do something wrong. Perhaps this gesture will get the ball rolling, and each member of your family can apologize for something for which he or she is sorry.
