How do I choose a trip?

There are many ways to choose which trip is best for you. You may feel a connection to a certain area; a place you’ve studied, visited before, or a specific culture or people group that God has put on your heart. Ultimately, we ask that you pray and ask God for discernment and confirmation as you consider this faith journey.

Should cost factor in to which trip I choose?

In short, NO! While financial stewardship is extremely important in our walk with Christ, our Heavenly Father provides for what He calls His children to. Your mission trip starts the moment you are accepted and the support raising process that you will be trained in is an incredible experience of God’s provision. The God we serve is bigger than any number. Pray about which of the countries and ministries the Lord would have you serve and sign up!

Do I have to be a church member of 12Stone to apply?

You do not have to be a member of 12Stone Church. However, it is largely beneficial to be a part of the church body and at least a regular attendee of a service. This also adds to the unity and comradery of the team.

What is the age requirement to participate on a short-term mission trip?

Every trip has different opportunities and challenges so each person’s ability to participate is handled on a case by case basis.

How will I know my application has been received?

Participants should receive an email within minutes of applying, confirming receipt of information. If you do not receive this email, please contact Sandra Hamilton at Sandra.Hamilton@12stone.com and specify your trip.

Are all applicants accepted?

Submitting an application does not guarantee your participation on a trip. All submitted applications are reviewed by the Global Outreach staff and the trip specific leader. Staff and trip leaders will use their discernment and inquire more information if needed. Current background checks are also mandatory. Once a participant is accepted or deferred to a later date, they will receive an email informing them on their updated status and the next steps to take.

There are limits to trip sizes but we will do our best to direct you to a similar trip if your first choice is full.

What will I do on this trip?

Each day participants will partner with local believers in their local neighborhoods, build relationships with people through community transformation projects, and help bring the love and message of Jesus to that location. Who knows, you may get back as much as you give!

Will I need a passport?

Yes. Passports are required for all travel outside the United States. If you do not currently hold a valid passport, you will need to begin the application process immediately. Standard processing time is 4-6 weeks. Step by step instructions on how to obtain a passport can be found here.

As soon as you have your passport you will need to submit a color photocopy to your team leader. We will need that information as soon as possible in order to secure the best possible flights for your trip. If your passport expires less than six months after the final day of your trip, you will need to renew your passport. Additionally, if you are a non-US passport holder, you are responsible for finding out visa and entry requirements for you to travel to a specific country.

Do I need vaccinations?

Yes. Higher rates of disease and sickness are prevalent in many developing countries around the world. Even though it is rare for travelers to contract such ailments while traveling abroad, it is best to adhere to the safety and health recommendations of the CDC and US Department of State. While we cannot require you to receive the vaccines, we strongly advise you do so as recommended by your local licensed physician. Please visit your local health department, tell them the country you will be visiting, and they can advise you on exactly what vaccinations are necessary. We also advise you to review the CDC’s website for a list of vaccines and more information regarding traveler’s health.

Can I travel to another destination or stay longer at my destination?

No. For many reasons (safety, liability, stewardship, etc.) we ask that all teams travel together for the entirety of the trip.

How long are trips?

The majority of trips last anywhere from 7 to 10 days.

How much do trips cost?

Trip costs typically range from $1,500 to $3,000. This includes your airfare, transportation, translators, meals in country, and housing. A $100 deposit fee is required with your application, which will be rolled into your trip balance upon acceptance. If you decide to have a meal or coffee at an airport, this will come from personal money unless otherwise specified by your trip leader.

In addition, you may want to bring personal spending money as some countries have markets to buy souvenirs. These make great mementos to remember your trip by, as well as thoughtful gifts for some of your financial supporters.

Is my deposit refundable?

Your trip deposit and all funds are a tax deductible contribution to 12Stone Church. IRS regulations prohibit 12Stone Church from refunding deposits and funds received for mission trips.

How do I get that kind of money?

Participants will raise financial support by writing support letters and meeting with friends and family. Most people cannot fund the trip themselves and even those who can are still encouraged to raise support. Many people don’t have the time or ability to go on mission trips but still want to be involved somehow. Your letter is an invitation to join you in prayer and in spreading the Gospel. Your trip leader will walk you through the process of support raising. For a lot of people, raising money is the most faith building part of the whole experience. It always requires courage to sign into something you can’t do without God.

How do I donate to someone’s mission trip?

Donors should make checks payable to 12Stone Church and write the person’s full name and destination in the memo line or include trip information in an envelope with the check. Checks with this information can be put into the offering plate, dropboxes, or mailed to the church at

  2. From here, donors can select the trip and individuals they want to support and input their financial information.

Where can I see how much support I’ve raised?

Your trip leader will give you updates on your support raising. Participants can also check their own fund raising progress by logging into “My Account” on 12Stone’s online giving page:

  1. Go to 12Stone.com/Give
  2. Click “Login” under “My Account” on the right-hand side.
  3. Either create an account for new users or sign-in with your existing account (Be careful not to make two accounts as this can cause confusion with your funds).

From here, click “My Mission Trips” at the top and you can now see your trip, by clicking on the link you can see your funds and view your donors

What if I raise more money than needed for the trip?

Throughout this ministry you will function as part of a team. Your effectiveness is determined not just from an individual standpoint, but also as a team. Each person’s ability to raise funds varies depending on who they know, how many people they know, their ability to communicate effectively, etc. Therefore, since the goal is to fund the entire team, any monies given beyond what you will need will go to support other team members who are struggling with their funds.

How much luggage can I bring?

Baggage allowances frequently change so check with the airline you are traveling with to receive the most up-to-date information. Typically two checked bags weighing no more than 50lbs and one carryon are allowed. Checked bags weighing more than the listed weight limit could be subject to additional fees. Team members will pay for any luggage overage fees with personal money.

How many people will be on a Mission Trip?

Team sizes typically range from 5 to 10 and vary based on location.

Are participants covered by insurance on the trip?

Yes. Travelers insurance is supplied for trip participants and coverage may vary depending on the destination and organization we are working with. Typical coverage might include Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Medical Expenses, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Family Coordination & Repatriation, Assistance Services, Crisis Management Service, luggage, General Liability, Disability Income, etc…

Will I be able to call home on my mission trip?

Most people would consider a mission trip to be the most significant spiritual act of their lives. We have found that participants are more engaged and receptive on a trip when they aren’t distracted or burdened with the demands and responsibilities of their home life. As a policy, 12Stone does not provide participants with a cell phone to call home and we strongly discourage the use of personal cell phones and electronics on a mission trip. Besides the immense cost incurred in making an international phone call, carrying around electronics in general makes individuals more susceptible as targets for theft in foreign countries. Your team leader will have access to a phone for emergencies and contact information will be provided for families in the States. In some cases teams may set up a blog or have access to the internet but, this depends on the location.
