Learning to Value Others

When things are going very well, it’s easy to slip into self-importance. We start to believe we’re the very reason the business or marriage is so extraordinary. But things don’t typically grow and prosper forever. Difficulty usually sets in.

When God has us in a season of humility and things aren’t going so well, perhaps He’s teaching us to value others.

Get Past Your Pride

Learn to live good in secret.

We need the power of the Holy Spirit down deep in our secret places because The Holy Spirit by the power of Christ will make us good form the bottom up.

When we become good in the secret hidden places, instead of trying to act good on the outside, we become good on the inside at the core, and good blossoms up!

This is how pride is beaten at the innermost core of ourselves.

Drill Down for Good

Discovered: When you chase Feel Good; it progressively destroys good. When you chase do good; it grows feel good!

The Challenge: Drill Down for Good (Because God’s good goes deeper and lasts longer.)

The Secret to a Merry Christmas “good life”? (Join Jesus)

  1. Yoke up for His pardon.
  2. Learn to live good in secret

Jesus never condemns people. Sin does that to people and Satan condemns.

Condemnation often comes because we’re either listening to other people or listening to the influence of Satan, or we’re not listening solely and first to God.

Sitting in condemnation is often an unrecognized form of pride. For some people, it’s their way of not accepting forgiveness.

Religion vs Jesus

Religion is us going to God.

Jesus is God coming to us.

Maybe you’re trying to reach God on your own, trying to be good enough, trying to reach God, trying to clean up your life, get God to love you, but the truth of the gospel is that the God has come to you.

This is how dangerous the religious spirit does, God can be moving right in front of you and miss it. Maybe it’s cynicism, or a critical spirit, or religious pride, or a preference, or tradition, but Jesus can be changing lives right in front of you don’t see it.

You can be more focused on your little issues than you are that miracles are happening.

Everyone is a Leader

Scripture: 2 Samuel 5-12

Quality #1 – Humility

  • The temptation of pride: My leadership is from me and it is for me.
  • The truth of humility: My leadership is from God and it is for others.

Quality #2 – Initiative

  • Leaders solve problems.
  • Leader make progress.
  • Leaders help people.

Questions for reflection:

  • What will you do to carry your leadership with humility?
  • What problem have you been sitting in that God is telling you its time to solve?
  • Who is in your backyard that you could help?

Availability vs Self-Centeredness

Scripture: Luke 9:23-25; Philippians 2:1-11

We live in the tension of love yourself and deny yourself.

To get past self-centeredness we must develop self-awareness.

Awareness of “if” (Philippians 2:1)

Availability to “then” (Philippians 2:2-8)

Simply put:

Availability is focusing your life (like Christ) on being a giver rather than a taker.

Grit vs Quit

Scripture: 2 Kings 13:14-19, Philippians 3:10-14

Grit: “Unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger. Perseverance and passion for long-term goals.”

Why do we need Grit?

  1. Everybody has challenges.
  2. We don’t choose our challenges, but we choose our response.
  3. The key to having Grit trending in your life is internal.

How to trend #grit in your life:

  1. Determine what you want.
  2. Let the past propel you and the future compel you.
  3. Practice Grit.
  4. The Final Step – Break the tape.

Truthfulness vs Deception

Scripture: Genesis Chapters 25 & 27

Three truths about truth and deception:

  1. If you lie you scar your soul, when you tell the truth you strengthen your soul.
  2. If you lie you hurt people, when you tell the truth you help people.
  3. If you lie you lose God’s cover when you tell the truth you gain God’s character.

Trending Truth:

  1. Truth aligns your heart with the heart of God.
  2. Truth leads to grace and forgiveness.
  3. Truth sets you free.

Two Key Questions:

  • What lie do you need to clean up?
  • What truth do you need to speak up?
