12Stone Church Fasting Guide

In this season of As It Is in Heaven, God is inviting us into a time of fasting and prayer. Fasting is a powerful spiritual practice that brings us closer to God, sharpens our focus, and strengthens our faith. As we seek to Know God more, let’s dive into what fasting means, why we do it, and how you can participate.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is intentionally abstaining from food or other distractions to draw nearer to God. It’s a time to seek His presence, listen to His voice, and align our hearts with His will. Whether you’re a seasoned faster or trying it for the first time, this guide will equip you for a meaningful experience.

Why Fast?

  1. Draw Closer to God: Fasting is an opportunity to prioritize our relationship with Him, creating space for prayer and reflection.
  2. Strengthen Faith: As we rely on God during this time, our faith grows stronger and our trust in Him deepens.
  3. Seek Guidance: Fasting opens our hearts and minds to hear God’s direction for our lives and our church.

Types of Fasting

  • Complete Fast: Abstaining from all food, drinking only water or clear liquids. This is a serious commitment and should be approached with caution.
  • Partial Fast: Removing certain foods or meals. For example, you might skip lunch or choose to avoid specific items like sweets or caffeine.
  • Daniel Fast: Inspired by Daniel’s fasting in the Bible, this includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water. It’s a great option for beginners!
  • Soul Fast: Abstaining from non-food distractions (social media, TV, etc.) to focus on spiritual growth.

Getting Started

  1. Prepare Your Heart Before you begin, take time to pray and seek God’s guidance. Ask Him to reveal any areas of your life that need focus during this fast.
  2. Set Your Goals What do you hope to achieve during this fast? Whether it’s spiritual growth, healing, or clarity, write down your goals and revisit them regularly.
  3. Choose Your Fast Select the type of fast that feels right for you. Consider your health and daily commitments as you make your choice.
  4. Pray Incorporate prayer into your fasting routine. Set aside specific times to pray and meditate on Scripture, inviting God into every moment. Here are a few verses to you can use to jumpstart your time with God — Psalm 139, Psalm 27, Psalm 84, Psalm 42, Psalm 16, Psalm 77, Psalm 91.

Tips for Success

  • Stay Hydrated: If you’re doing a complete or partial fast, ensure you’re drinking plenty of water.
  • Fast with Community: Connect with fellow church members for support and encouragement. Share your experiences with your Group and pray for one another. If you aren’t part of a group yet join one in our Spring Season which opens at the end of January!
  • Journal: Document your thoughts, prayers, and any insights you receive. Reflecting on your journey can deepen your experience.
  • Listen to Worship Music: Fill your environment with uplifting music that draws you closer to God.

Dos and Don’ts of Fasting

Dos

  • Do Seek God First: Make prayer and Scripture reading your priority during this fast.
  • Do Stay Committed: Stick to your chosen fast, even when it gets tough.
  • Do Be Honest: Share your journey and struggles with God and with others.
  • Do Talk to Your Doctor: Pay attention to how you’re feeling, and don’t hesitate to adjust your fast if necessary.
  • Do Celebrate the Small Wins: Acknowledge the breakthroughs and insights God gives you along the way.

Don’ts

  • Don’t Compare: Everyone’s journey is unique. Focus on your own experience with God.
  • Don’t Rush: Take your time; spiritual growth doesn’t happen overnight.
  • Don’t Overcomplicate: Keep it simple. Fasting is about drawing near to God, not following rigid rules.
  • Don’t Isolate Yourself: Engage with your Group and loved ones around you for support and encouragement.
  • Don’t Give Up: If you stumble or feel weak, get back up and continue your journey. God honors your effort!

Ending Your Fast

When your fast concludes, ease back into regular eating. Consider gradually reintroducing foods, especially if you’ve done a complete or partial fast. Take time to reflect on what God taught you during this period.
