Today’s Bible Reading:

And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?'”

But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

Mark 5:25-34

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

Reflection:

Who thought you’d find me at the lowest place?

Who thought you’d feel me in the crowd?

Who thought you’d make good of my mistakes?

You’re nothing like I thought you were; you’re better

This is where all of our stories start. The details are as varied as we are as individuals — but the fact remains that, like the woman suffering from bleeding, God saw you, loved you, found you, and forgave you — and that means you specifically! God knows your circumstances, your loneliness, your heart, your efforts, your trials — and He meets you with a love that is absolutely perfect in the midst of all of it. Our best ideas of who God is pale in comparison to how good he actually is!

Now read Romans 5:8. And then think about this line of the song:

They say it’s over for a sinner

But you say, “No it’s not! No, it’s not!”

When sin would have left us stuck forever in our own inadequacy, failure, and shame, thinking it’s hopeless, God had a different plan! He sent Jesus while we were stuck and made a way out for us where there was only death. Spend some time thanking God for this right now!

Practice:

Listen to and/or sing What A God today. After the first verse, as you sing “What a God, What A God”, think about your own circumstances, your own lowest place, and your own mistakes, then thank Him for finding you there. And after the second verse, when you hear God’s declaration of “No it’s not!”, sing “What a God” again with a grateful, joyful heart — because it’s not over! Not only are you loved specifically by the King of the universe despite your sin, but the more you choose to spend time with Him, the more He will change you each day to look more and more like Him!
