How to Pray: Psalm 62

Prayer is all about creating and deepening a personal relationship with God. Its inviting God into your every day, every thought, and every decision. Even though prayer is about relationship, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start or what to say. This week, we’re practicing the ACTS prayer—focusing on Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication (Stuff). Each day, we’ll practice ACTS by using a chapter from Psalm. You’ll use ACTS to shape your personal prayer time based on the passage.

Adoration

Praise God for who He is! Use the passage, what it says about God, and praise Him for it.

 

Confession

Prayer is the moment you can be completely open and vulnerable with God. Take a moment to confess any sin, mindsets, behavior, habits, or addictions. Use the Scripture to guide your confession if needed.

 

Thanksgiving

Thank God for who He is and what He’s done. You’ve taken a moment to praise Him, now thank Him. Take the characteristics mentioned in Scripture and thank Him for exactly how He’s shown that to you.

 

Supplication (Stuff)

Now’s the time to speak your prayer requests to God. They can be requests for you or someone else. A personal relationship with God means you can bring everything to Him. He listens to your requests, desires, and hopes.

1 Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.
2 Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

3 How long will you assault me?
Would all of you throw me down—
this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
4 Surely they intend to topple me
from my lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
but in their hearts they curse.

5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
8 Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

9 Surely the lowborn are but a breath,
the highborn are but a lie.
If weighed on a balance, they are nothing;
together they are only a breath.
10 Do not trust in extortion
or put vain hope in stolen goods;
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them.

11 One thing God has spoken,
two things I have heard:
“Power belongs to you, God,
12     and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”;
and, “You reward everyone
according to what they have done.”

Adoration

God, You are my rock and my salvation. Whatever I face, You are my hope and place of rest. Nothing can stand against you—no addiction, no circumstance, no struggle has a claim on me where you are present. You are my refuge and the One I can trust. Because of Your faithful love, I can bring all of myself to You—even my flaws and failures. What else do you adore about God?

 

Confession

I confess there are places and people outside of You where I seek rest and refuge. Sometimes, You are not the first place I turn. I can let addictions, circumstances, and struggles overwhelm me instead of being overwhelmed by Your presence. Open up to God more through confession. Remember, He loves you unconditionally.

 

Thanksgiving

Thank you, Lord, for Your unfailing love. Even when I feel unworthy, I know I can turn to You. I am grateful that my salvation is dependent on You, not on me. You receive my grieving and joyous heart in the same hand. I am thankful to have a place of comfort and refuge in You. Tell God more of the ways you’re thankful for Him.

 

Supplication (Stuff)

Remind me that I cannot earn Your love. You give it feely. Help me to lay all things at Your feet. You are my hope and refuge. Help me be vulnerable with You because You already know all of me. When I am weak, remind me how I can rest in You. I also pray that you would… [ask God for what you need]. Continue asking God for what you need. He cares for you and listens to your requests. Amen.
