Fasting Guide

bg-Revival Nights worship

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Matthew 6:5-18 – Jesus’ own words on prayer and fasting.

Fasting is a powerful spiritual practice that brings us closer to God, sharpens our focus, and strengthens our faith. As we seek to Know God more, let’s dive into what fasting means, why we do it, and how you can participate.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is intentionally abstaining from food or other distractions to draw nearer to God. It’s a time to seek His presence, listen to His voice, and align our hearts with His will. Whether you’re a seasoned faster or trying it for the first time, this guide will equip you for a meaningful experience.

Why Fast?

  1. Draw Closer to God: Fasting is an opportunity to prioritize our relationship with Him, creating space for prayer and reflection.
  2. Strengthen Faith: As we rely on God during this time, our faith grows stronger and our trust in Him deepens.
  3. Seek Guidance: Fasting opens our hearts and minds to hear God’s direction for our lives and our church.

Types of Fasting

  1. Complete Fast: Abstaining from all food, drinking only water or clear liquids. This is a serious commitment and should be approached with caution.

  2. Partial Fast: Removing certain foods or meals. For example, you might skip lunch or choose to avoid specific items like sweets or caffeine.

  3. Daniel Fast: Inspired by Daniel’s fasting in the Bible, this includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and water. It’s a great option for beginners!

  4. Soul Fast: Abstaining from non-food distractions (social media, TV, etc.) to focus on spiritual growth.

Getting Started

  1. Prepare Your Heart: Before you begin, take time to pray and seek God’s guidance. Ask Him to reveal any areas of your life that need focus during this fast.
  2. Set Your Goals: What do you hope to achieve during this fast? Whether it’s spiritual growth, healing, or clarity, write down your goals and revisit them regularly.
  3. Choose Your Fast: Select the type of fast that feels right for you. Consider your health and daily commitments as you make your choice.
  4. Pray: Incorporate prayer into your fasting routine. Set aside specific times to pray and meditate on Scripture, inviting God into every moment.

Tips for Success

  1. Stay Hydrated: If you’re doing a complete or partial fast, ensure you’re drinking plenty of water.

  2. Join a Group: Connect with fellow church members for support and encouragement. Share your experiences and pray for one another.

  3. Journal: Document your thoughts, prayers, and any insights you receive. Reflecting on your journey can deepen your experience.

  4. Listen to Worship Music: Fill your environment with uplifting music that draws you closer to God.
